BS MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY(MLT)
Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)is the pioneer field of Allied Health Sciences which basically deals with Laboratory investigation in terms of diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases. With the current advancement in the field of science and technology, MLT has also evolved greatly. Initially, there used to be 6 months training to become a certified laboratory technician. Then, in 1961 for the first time a School of Medical Technology was established in Pakistan by the government in order to meet with the increasing demand of well educated, well trained and competent Laboratory personnel.
The Significance of MLT can be understood from the fact that around 70% of all decisions regarding diagnosis, treatment, admission in the hospitals and discharge are solely based on the Lab results. In UK, the workforce of Laboratory personnel, along with other Allied Health Professionals, comprises of only 5% but their work underpins around 80% ofentire diagnosis and clinical decision.
A Medical Laboratory Technologist (now a days known as Medical Laboratory Scientist) possess advance knowledge and skills and perform complex test or assays. Laboratory Technologists may be Generalists or a Specialists depending upon the skills and lab they are working in. As per reports, majority of the Technologists work fulltime in labs of hospital, reference and research labs or other Private labs. However, they may also have opportunities of employment in forensic, food and environmental labs. In Addition, numerous manufacturer and supplier of lab equipments and diagnostic kits also prefer experienced Technologists for the development of new products, sales and marketing of their products.
CMT offers a four-year BS MLT program, where students will strongly be educated theoretically along with a robust emphasis on developing practical skills via rigorous training in the different labs of Mardan Medical Complex in order to meet the required challenges of modern health care system.
